GRIP: THE UCSB GRADUATE RESEARCH INTERSHIP PROGRAM

UC Santa Barbara’s Graduate Research Internship Program (GRIP) provides underrepresented students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with a guided summer research experience. Participants emerge from this intensive program with essential training and skills that enable them to more effectively compete for doctoral programs and post-doctoral research opportunities.
Award
Participants receive a stipend, on-campus housing, and a contribution toward travel costs to UCSB.
Eligibility & Requirements
- Must currently be majoring in a STEM discipline
(at least junior or senior status). - Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Be available for the full duration of the program.
- Provide the names of at least two potential UCSB faculty research mentors with whom you would like to conduct research.
- Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
Program Description
If you are a current undergraduate or master's student, you are invited to participate in an 8-week research experience at UCSB. You will work in a research laboratory under the mentorship of a UCSB faculty member and research team on a mutually decided upon research project. In addition, each student will complete an independent project (e.g. a proposal, a publication, a literature review) as agreed upon by student and mentor. You will also gain familiarity with a potential doctoral department and the greater UCSB community.
Application
To apply for GRIP you will need to submit the following materials by mail:
- A completed application form: (MS Word) (PDF)
- An essay addressing specific questions found in the application.
- An official transcript from your current institution.
- Two letters of recommendation from a faculty member at your
current college or university. - Names of two potential research mentors (UCSB faculty only).
