Checklist of Formatting Requirements

Legibility and Appearance
Typeface or font must be used which is clear and legible (ProQuest requirement). No streaks, smudges, or extraneous marks; no white-out or correction tape (ProQuest and Library requirement) One-sided printing of all pages of the manuscript is required.
Margins
Left margin must be set for at least 1.5" from edge of paper. The top, right, and bottom margin must be set at least 1.25" from edge of paper. Other than page numbers, nothing is to intrude into margins (UC Bindery requirement).
Fonts & Font Sizes
A font of at least 12 for the preliminary pages and body of text; a font size of at least 10 for footnotes, tables, and captions. Use of standard font is recommended.
Page Number Placement
Page numbers must be centered, placed .75 inches from bottom edge of pages and be placed consistently throughout the manuscript
Pagination Standards
Except for the title and approval pages, each page of manuscript must be numbered - no missing, blank, or duplicate numbers or pages. Use lower case Roman numerals to number preliminary pages; use Arabic numerals to number body of text and back matter (the first chapter of the body of your dissertation should be numbered ‘1’).
Numbering of Preliminary Pages
Title and approval pages are counted but not numbered; subsequent pages (e.g. the abstract) are numbered beginning with Roman numeral ‘iii’.
Spacing Between Lines
Preliminary pages (except for title page) and text must be double-spaced. Long quotations, footnotes, captions, tables, original surveys may be single-spaced (ProQuest requirement; see Chapter II of Guide to Filing for exceptions)
Dates Used On Approval and Title Pages
For the Approval page use the month and year the faculty members will sign. For the Title page use the month and year of degree conferral
Faculty Signatures on Approval Pages
All committee members must sign in black or blue ink
Abstract/Vita
Abstract double-spaced. Vita required for doctoral candidates (ProQuest requirement)
Standards Governing Manuscript Titles
Use concise manuscript titles (not to exceed 50 words) with easily identifiable key words that summarize research. Use word substitutes in place of non-alphabetical symbols in scientific titles (ProQuest requirement)
Permission Letters
Letters granting permission to use previously copyrighted material must accompany manuscript when copying exceeds fair use (ProQuest requirement). Please submit permission letters with thesis/dissertation in the Graduate Division.
